Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 25, 2026
Veil ("we", "us", or "the Service") is a private iOS browser whose core feature is generating
real-time Chinese subtitles for web video. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains
what data we collect, how we use it, and how we handle your audio content. By using Veil, you
agree to the data practices described in this policy.
Information We Collect
To provide accounts and subtitle service, we collect a limited set of data:
-
Apple sign-in identifier (sub): when you use "Sign in with Apple", Apple
provides us with an anonymous, stable identifier (
sub) tied to your Apple
account. We use it to create and recognize your account. We do not receive your Apple ID,
email address, or real name unless you choose to share them during the Apple sign-in flow.
-
Usage records: for metering and rate limiting, we record the audio duration
(in seconds) and translated character count for each request, aggregated daily. This is used
for balance deduction, abuse prevention, and cost accounting.
-
Abuse-prevention signal: when you sign in, we compute a salted, one-way hash
of your IP address and keep only a per-day count of new sign-ups per hashed value. We never
store your raw IP address, and the hash cannot be reversed to recover it. This is used solely
to detect and slow down automated bulk account creation, and the counts are deleted after 30 days.
We do not collect your browsing history. The websites you visit, the pages you
open, your searches, and your bookmarks stay on your device and are never sent to our servers.
We only ever receive the specific audio you submit for transcription and the text you submit for
translation — never the addresses those came from or any record of your browsing. The one
exception is a diagnostic report you explicitly choose to send: as described in "Diagnostics You
Choose to Send" below, it can include the domain names of the sites involved and which site
adapter handled them, but never the specific pages you visited.
How Audio Is Handled
Audio you submit for transcription in Veil is forwarded in real time to a
third-party speech recognition service for processing and is never stored
on our servers. The audio is used only to generate the transcription result for
that request and is discarded immediately afterward. We retain only the duration metric for
that request — never the audio content itself.
Third-Party Processors
To provide speech recognition (ASR) and text translation, we forward audio and text to the
following third-party processor:
- Volcano Engine (a ByteDance cloud service): processes speech recognition and machine translation requests.
Data transferred to Volcano Engine is used solely to fulfill the transcription/translation
request you initiated, not for advertising or any other purpose unrelated to Veil. Volcano
Engine's handling of this data is governed by its own privacy policy and terms of service.
Diagnostics You Choose to Send
Veil never sends diagnostic information automatically. If you choose to open the diagnostics
option in Settings and confirm the dialog that shows exactly what will be sent, we receive a
log of the app's own activity — timings, error codes, and which site adapter handled a
download — together with your app version, iOS version, device model, locale, and any
note you choose to type in. If you are signed in, the report also includes your account
identifier, so we can match it back to the account that sent it; if you are not signed in, no
identifier is included and the report cannot be linked to an account.
Web addresses that appear in the log are redacted before it ever leaves your device: only the
domain is kept, and the path, query string, and fragment are replaced with a one-way hash that
cannot be turned back into the original page. Any credentials embedded in a web address are
dropped entirely, never hashed or transmitted. We still do not collect your browsing
history. Diagnostic reports are stored for 30 days and then deleted.
How We Use Data
- To identify and maintain your account, keeping you signed in consistently across devices.
- To calculate your credits balance and enforce daily usage limits, preventing abuse.
- To troubleshoot issues, monitor service health, and respond to incidents.
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell your personal data to third parties.
Data Retention
Account information and usage records are retained for as long as your account exists, for
balance calculation and reconciliation. Audio content itself is not stored — see "How Audio Is
Handled" above. Diagnostic reports you choose to send are retained for 30 days — see
"Diagnostics You Choose to Send" above.
Data Deletion
If you would like to delete your account and associated data, please email
support@veilbrowsers.com. We will process your request
after verifying your identity.
Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal
information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information
without parental consent, please contact us so we can delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected on
this page, with the "Effective date" above updated accordingly. Continued use of Veil after
changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
